A few answers to keep you comfortable at the table.

Where should a beginner start?

Choose Learn to Play on the home screen. Begin with Make a Set, using just bamboo tiles. Each rung adds an idea, and the first Calling hand walks you through playing with opponents. Our beginner's guide to Hong Kong mahjong is a handy reference between hands.

Why can't I call Mahjong with a complete hand?

At the full table you need four sets and a pair and at least 3 faan. A complete shape can fall below that minimum. Check the hand-value hints and the scoring patterns in How to Play. Seven pairs does not win under these Hong Kong Old Style rules. The early Calling and Kongs & Flowers practice rungs have no faan minimum.

Why can't I claim that chow?

A chow is three consecutive numbers in the same suit. You can claim one only from the player on your left. A pung or kong can be claimed from any opponent, and a legal win can use any opponent's discard.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No account is needed. Lessons and games work offline. The free 1.0 app is for iPhone and iPad, with Mei, Auntie Ruth and Jasper at your full table. Optional Game Center achievements use Apple's service; they aren't required to play.

How does the learning help work?

Learn to Play introduces the game gradually, with a guided first Calling hand and a coach in practice. At your full table, hand-value hints help you understand what you are building. The free table keeps its opponents, difficulty, rules and helpers fixed.

How do I turn off analytics?

Open Settings → Privacy and turn off Share usage and crash data. The app remembers that choice. See the privacy policy for what anonymous analytics collects.

Why are Game Center achievements not appearing?

Game Center is optional. Check your Game Center sign-in in your device's Settings and your connection to Apple's service. You can keep playing without it.
